How to Complete a Task

How to Complete a Task

It is all very well learning something new and shown how to do it right, but we still have to get off our butts and take action. Learn to complete a task.

Here I show you 4 steps to make things happen, get off your butt and get jobs done!

  1. Take action and make it happen
  2. Overcoming fear of failure
  3. Stop being a perfectionist
  4. Tips to getting things done

Take Action And Make it Happen

The bottom line is that you have to do stuff for things to happen. No amount of wishing, affirmations, the law of attraction or prayers is going to manifest things for you.

If you want organic traffic to your website, then you have to write SEO content or pay someone else to do this for you.

Either method is taking action. Inaction leads to no traffic, and your website is dead in the water.

With no action, then either one and sometimes both reasons will be the cause of your inaction — fear of failure and perfectionism.

Overcoming Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is probably the number one cause of most people’s inability to take action and do the work that they promised themselves that they would do.

Complete a Task - You will succeed

A considerable part of my youth was held back by this irrational fear. It took me many years to understand my procrastination but eventually, with the advent of the internet and readily available information and shared knowledge; I discovered the error of my ways.

To put everything I learned and to summerise into one short paragraph, it is this.

Failure is not to be feared! Failing should be welcomed, as without mistakes we will not learn. By learning what does not work, will ultimately succeed. Since I joined Wealthy Affiliate back in 2017, my digital marketing skills have grown immensely. Alongside the technical skills, my writing has improved in leaps and bounds.

If you read some biographies of today’s top success stories, you will find that most of them by far will have failed many times before they succeed.

What these successful people showed, is a belief in what they were doing and not giving up. They will always complete a task.

The second most frequent cause of people’s procrastination is perfectionism. Perfectionism is the root cause of not finishing to complete a task.

Stop Being a Perfectionist

I recently came across a Bob Newhart comedy sketch online. The Doctor’s solution to the patient’s problem was simple – STOP IT!

Bob Newhart – Stop It!

Many people make little progress in building their website, as they get tied up with getting the site, plugins, themes and especially content completed. Write your content and publish it.

Write how many words you set yourself and write (or get someone else to write), edit it for grammar errors and publish it. Stop trying to make it perfect, or worse still, not being able to complete the task. I say to you. Stop it!

Tips to Getting Things Done

Here is my list to get a few things done. Each one will help you to complete a task.

My first tip is a daily positive affirmation.

To get fire in my belly and to get my mind in the right state to take critical action, is to use positive affirmations. What you need to do is write your statements down and recite them every day. Eventually, our subconscious mind takes note, and our behaviour starts to change.

I Am

Writing down and reciting clear positive affirmations stating that your life is good, and I don’t fully understand the science, but change will happen, and I am now motivated to take action, and to write content again. As I write more, my writing becomes more fluid, and as a result, I’m spending I’m less time writing articles.

To get you started, here is a list of some positive affirmations.

I Am The Best I Can Be

You can modify these as much as you like. Build on these affirmations, and make them meaningful to your situation.

Do not feel self-conscious when reading these aloud. You don’t have to share this habit with anyone. You must decide that you will make changes to your life. No-one can do this for you.

My second tip is meditation.

I’m an Apple fan, and I use the “Oak” app on my iPhone, for my meditation seasons.

I have tried many guided meditation apps, and I found this one to be the best one for me. Here is a link to the Oak App on the iTunes store, and it is a non-affiliate link.

Oak Meditation App

I use this app daily, first thing in the morning; this started a few weeks ago with a 10-minute guided meditation session, followed by 15-minute sessions during the last week.

If you do not want to use meditation, then I suggest using prayer.

Either way, practice this daily and make it a habit.

It will quieten your mind and help make your day less stressful.

My third tip is to write something every day.

Do this at the same time of day. Fit this in with your affirmations. If your statement is to write five hundred words a day, then write at least five hundred words every day. Make it a habit!

Make this word-count every day, and make it count towards your primary money-making goal.

Try to write SEO content first, as this is what is going to build your business.

Failing that, the writing five hundred words across social media are not a total waste if it is related to promoting your business.

Complete a Task - Write Every Day

My reason for being here is to build SEO content and build my business, so this is my primary goal, but it may not be yours.

Maybe your primary goal is to write a book, and your website is secondary to your tome. You still need to write every day. Make it a habit.

In summary, you should take action. As it seems to be the number one reason that differentiates those people that succeed, and those that do not. If you are not taking action, it’s just a dream.

Therefore, it makes sense to take some action that moves you nearer your goal, however small it might be, to keep moving forward!

The top reason why people don’t take action is the fear of failure. Having spent my sixty plus years avoiding failure. I can tell you now, it sucks!

The stepping stones to success are the number of failures you have made. Without making failures, you are not going to learn what it takes to succeed.

Being a perfectionist cripples your ability to complete tasks. Being perfect takes too much time, do the job now, and move on. Just write what you think, you can come back to it tomorrow.

Take action, don’t be afraid to get it wrong. Just complete a task!

Have some relevant affirmations that you can recite daily. These will help to keep your momentum going through the tough times.

You can do it; you will do it, you are right to do it.

Take time-out each day for relaxation. Take up meditation or yoga. Chill out, and relax.

Why aren’t we writing better content? If you want to be an affiliate marketer, then write something every day. The more you do it, the better you’ll get.

  1. Thank you for sharing. I found that getting my mind right makes a huge difference. I believe you are referring to this in points one and two. I would add setting goals and priorities are another factor as well as developing routines around those goals. For example, I have set a goal of building a website and as I plan to build I take on one aspect at a time. Meanwhile, I build my routines by setting aside time to build along with time to continually work on my mental fortitude. As far as meditation, I usually set aside the first part of my day for prayer and to review my goals for the day to ensure my activities align with those things.

    • Hi Lee,

I couldn’t agree more. Planning is essential as is setting goals. I too like to take time out to be at peace with myself. My focus is to make my writing a habit.

      I wish you every success,

  2. Thank you for this article. I think what you said is absolutely correct about how we don’t take action- it is very important that we take action in order to complete something or to reach our goals. I really liked the idea of the “I am… valuable” daily positive affirming- I think I will try to do this as I do see a benefit from it. Thanks for this article!

    • Hi Hbee,

The two most powerful words in the English language; I AM. Keep taking action, even if they are only little steps.

      Keep moving forward.

      Best wishes,

  3. Dear Paul,

Thanks for the article I enjoyed it and I must say I found your post highly uplifting and educational. I can tell you I have taken some great insights from this post.

Indeed, Taking action is very important. Once I read most people are not failing because of wrong planning or not planning but many fail because they are not implementing what they planned, not taking action. People are waiting for it to happen instead of making it happen.

To be honest your post hit me on my head and I need to work on the things I planned and take action right now. Also postponing things is another bad habit I have, often saying “Lets do it tomorrow”.

Being a full-time blogger your post means a lot to me and you not only discussed the problem but provided with the solution as well. I need to implement all the three tips you shared. Although I am completely relying on organic traffic I am not producing the content daily and going forward, from today I am going to write and publish one quality post daily.

    Much Success!

    • Hi Paul,

I have been guilty of waiting for things to happen. Now that I am in my senior years, I am more proactive. It gives me a buzz, and I look forward to getting up in the morning and doing stuff!

Stick with the writing Paul. Aim for one article per week. When you are comfortable with that you can increase that to two per week.

      Hears to your success,

  4. Even though you were talking about completing a task within a business, I really like how all of this applies to regular life as well. As I’m typing, I should be making a post myself on my blog so it is good I ran across your beautiful words to motivate me to get busy at it. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind of all the other daily stuff and focus at the task at hand. I know a lot of people use the excuse that meditation takes time, it only takes a few minutes and you can time in the process because you are so much more focused at what you are doing you don’t waste time with all that mind clutter. Very good advice, and I will take it as well.

    • Hi Sara,

Thanks for leaving your comment. I agree, having a positive attitude, being organised and getting things done does apply to all areas of our lives. I find meditation helps to get through the days stress.

      Many thanks,

  5. Hello, Paul and thanks for writing this post.  Completing tasks has always been an issue for me since I started my online journey.  I get to a certain point and then it takes me more time than I care to admit.

After watching (and laughing through) the video, I realize that |I have to “STOP IT” and start “TAKING ACTION” or the same thing will keep happening.  Believe me, I understand that.  The only thing that works is action.

You are absolutely right and so is Bob Newhart.  Thanks for bringing it home.  I will write down those affirmations.

And the part about writing 500 words a day.  That’s where I started and I can pretty much guarantee that if one can write 500 words once, they will soon be writing 1000, 1500, 2000 words without much more effort.

    Thanks Again, and WA rocks,

    • Hi Wayne,

Thanks for leaving your comment. It has taken me a long time to learn these things, but slow and steady wins the race!

I have to chuckle every time I tell myself to STOP IT! I can’t get this comedy sketch out of my mind now, Lol!

I agree 100%, Wealthy Affiliate rocks!

      Best wishes,

  6. This is an encouraging article and I can totally relate to. When I started blogging back in Nov 2018, it took me 2 weeks to write one post and it felt so difficult and painful. Now I can write about 2 posts per week and quality of articles are so much better. I guess I learned without thinking about learning by focusing on “writing”. I do take a similar approach as you. If I have 6 points to make in my article, I’d aim to finish writing at least 2 bullet points. Then I usually end up achieving more. I guess breaking it out into pieces will reduce the overwhelming feeling. One another tip I can think of is taking deep breaths several times. It will refresh your brain and mood and you’ll be able to start writing with a positive mindset (instead of “I hate writing” mentality.

    • Hi Saori,

I whole-heartedly agree. We have to learn to enjoy the tasks. Otherwise, we will find excuses not to do them.  By deconstructing the tasks to manageable chunks then the whole becomes attainable.
      Best wishes,Paul

  7. Hi, Paul, thank you for sharing how to complete a task. Procrastination is something that holds a lot of people back from getting things done. It’s like you said, some people are too afraid to fail at a project, they won’t even start working on building their business.
The fear of writing causes a lot of folks to give up on their dreams. I like you fix to the problem, writing a little every day will boost your confidence.
I’m a believer that prayers and positive thinking take a person a long way. Also find yourself around like-minded people.

    • Hi LeNard,

Thank you for leaving your comment. It is much appreciated. I thought it was just me, but I found out that this is something that causes many people to never reach their full potential. I am getting better and I refuse to give up!

      Kind regards,

  8. Oh yes indeed taking action is very important. Most persons fail not just because of wrong plans or no plans but lack of not implementation, not taking action, they wait to see things happen instead of making it happen. This isn’t just a post but words of encouragement. I really like how this applies to regular life as well. Thumbs up

    • Hi Destiny,

Thank you for your kind comments. It is all about taking action. The more we can make the challenging jobs look easier the more likely we will find the motivation to complete a task, in all walks of life.
      Best wishes,

  9. Thanks for writing this article on how to complete a task. I must commend you for taking your time to write this article and also I like the fact that you share your success story because I do like to read article from an experience affiliate marketer. I still new in online affiliate marketing and I find every part of this article useful. I have join wealthy affiliate for sometimes now and I can say I have learn alot of things

    • Hi Ajibola40,

Thank you for your comments. I’m in it for the long haul. I am still learning and getting things wrong. Today I learned that I had been making one fundamental mistake with my blog posts regarding SEO. I’ve now gone through all my posts and corrected my error. I am very thankful to Wealthy Affiliate for showing me how to get it right!

      Best wishes,

  10. Excellent advice! My biggest problem is being a perfectionist, honestly. I keep writing and rewriting and rewording and I have to force myself to stop it.

My second biggest problem is getting distracted! Oh my word, I go to Facebook for my business, and cat rescue stuff, next thing I know, three hours passed. It’s not watching videos either. I’m learning how to limit myself. Kind of.

I don’t know that ‘I write five hundred words’ is an affirmation, more of a daily goal or habit. My affirmations are things like, “I am successful” or “I am beautiful” or “I can do this.”

That said, I do create daily goals! “I will write one article draft today” or “I will research 10 new keywords today” or ” I will check my email once today”. Lol I mentioned being distracted, right?

I’m happy to see other people do the same things I do. Thanks for the post!

    • Hi Selenity Jade,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. We all want things to be perfect but sometimes doing so holds us back. It is best just to get the job done. We can always go back and improve things later.

“I write five hundred words,” said every day could be an affirmation is so far as it will become true, once you believe it. It is one of many daily affirmations that I make. I don’t chastise myself if I don’t do these things, but I know that if I keep chipping away at my mental blocks, these thoughts will become actions. Do it anyway, is my mantra!

I deleted my FB app from my “smart” phone! It takes a little longer to get on to FB using a browser, especially if I keep myself logged out. I don’t look at FB much these days. That must be good!

      Best wishes,

  11. I’m happy to read this lovely post about how to complete a task.  I would say it’s an eye opener. I also love the way you highlighted your points.setting a plan and taking action towards it is very vital, I set my goals daily, weekly monthly and yearly. This has been helping me.  I have been following your blog posts for a long time because your posts are always educative and informational.I must tell you this is not an exception.regards.

    • Hi Adamu2,

Thank you for your kind words. I keep telling myself, the more I write, the better I will get. I hope that’s true.

Setting goals is a great idea. There is a saying that a goal without a plan is just a dream. I hope that you have made a step by step plan to accomplish those goals?

      Best wishes,

  12. Wow! This article is mind-blowing. Teaching to get responsible by doing something in order to expect a change, is a candid motivation. Doing the right thing to get a result. Taking action is really the key. Overcoming the fear of failure and seeing it as part of the deal to success is also learned from this article.

it is never a doubt that thousands of success have been recording from the Wealthy Affiliates community where almost all online success skills are learned. However, I used to think that being perfect is key to succeed in the online business world but from your article, I can see it is not but by following the wonderful steps you outlined in your article. Thank you

    • Hi Chidiking88,

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, being perfect is highly over-rated! I think most successful people would say that taking action is the key to their success.

      Best wishes,

  13. Thanks for your share, I have always had a fear of failure, I have told myself that I am going to work o positive affirmations every day, I haven’t gotten to that point because it seems like I keep forgetting to do it, I need to work on remembering to follow through with it.

The subconscious mind can be a very powerful tool when trained, that’s why it’s such an important aspect including those positive affirmations every day. I would also like to check out the meditation app. Writing everyday is a challenge I have also, after I finish a blog, it seems like the next day is consumed with different aspects of growing traffic on social media, then I might knock out 800-1000 words the next day.

I am really inspired by your blog post, you have some great work.

    • Hi Neil,

Thanks for leaving a comment. I hope my article continues to inspire you to keep up with the writing. If you are not a natural writer SEO Content can be a drag.

      Best wishes,
